Duelyst Central Spotlight Rsquared
When I first started this website this is one of things I really wanted to do. I have no idea why it took so long for it happen but the first one is finally here. Duelyst has many great content creators, players and developers that we know only a tiny bit about and in the future I hope to get to talk them and bring you that content on this site. So here is our first Duelyst Central Spotlight Rsquared.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? When did you start drawing and getting into art?
My name is Ricardo Rivera, and currently I am 17 years old. I was born (to a Newyorkrican father and a Dutch mother) in Puerto Rico, but have since also lived in New Jersey and the Netherlands, where I now reside. Even though I’ve been drawing all my life (so I’m told), I really started looking to art as a serious career option about 3 years ago, and have been working on that skill ever since.
When did you start playing Duelyst about duelyst? What do you think about art in found Duelyst?
I started playing Duelyst about 2 years ago, after it being featured in a video about underrated games. I had never really played a game like it before, but the fact that it was a free browser game, had great mechanics, had short games and had amazing pixel art is really what drew me in. I think the pixel art of Duelyst is incredible; its one of the only works of pixel art that really resonate with me. Its detailed enough for you to identify major shapes and understand the anatomy of the characters, but still pixelated enough for your imagination to fill in the blanks. Not only that, but the animation is clear and powerful even at a low pixel count. And then there is the promotional, more realistic art Counterplay has released alongside new expansions, which is creative and cool, with a very unique style. I could go on and on about how each faction also has their own unique design motifs and all that other artsy stuff, but then I would be writing an essay XD. So in short, its great, and I can’t get enough. In fact, one of the reasons I started making Duelyst art was because I felt like Duelyst Fans wanted MORE, and I decided to try to fill in that demand.
What is your favorite art for Duelyst that you have done so far?
I think each piece has their own strengths and weaknesses, but right now my favorite would have to be my most recent, which is the wallpaper illustration for Vaath the Immortal. Its realistic as a distance but with loser brushstrokes up close, puts Vaath in a very cool lighting setup and has an interactive relationship between the colors blue, green and red. I also like this one because of how it has a bit of a story for the observant viewer; I wanted the background to be reminiscent of the chrysalis’ that the Magmar are reborn in, and so this image would represent Vaath newly emerging from his chrysalis, ready for battle. I’m definitely going to try to incorporate more story elements like that into my art as well, because I feel like art that is faithful to the lore will resonate with the fans more.
Where can we find more art from you ? Where can people contact you for commissions for your art?
I have an artstation account (https://www.artstation.com/scrawlrico) where I post a lot of game stuff, as well as an instagram (https://www.instagram.com/r_squared_art/) which is focused on art and philosophy (a hobby of mine). My art Email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. And of course, there’s Reddit, where I post most of my Duelyst art to https://www.reddit.com/r/duelyst/. If it can be drawn, I can paint it too, and so I am readily available for commissions through any of these sources! I also take requests of anything else, in any style as well!
